Silver Spring Stage is holding auditions for She Stoops to Conquer. The production will be directed by Katie Rey Bogdan and performances will be January 15 through February 7, 2027 (See details below.)

 

Auditions will be held at Silver Spring Stage (10145 Colesville Rd, Silver Spring, MD) on:

●      Monday October 26 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm

●      Tuesday October 27 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm

 

Callbacks by invitation will be on Wednesday October 28 from 6:30pm to 10pm.

To audition, sign up here for a five-minute slot.

Please pick a monologue from the show and prepare it for your audition. It does not need to be memorized; the focus should be on the language and on strong character choices.

 

Some Notes About Auditions & Schedules: 
Actors will need to fill out an audition form and submit a resume and headshot if available. Access the form here to print it out and complete it prior to your audition.

Actors must note their conflicts throughout the rehearsal process (starting November 3rd) and run of the show, January 15 through February 7, 2027. PLEASE INCLUDE ANY HOLIDAY TRAVEL!!!!!

 

Rehearsals will typically be held four times a week, on both weeknights and weekends, depending on cast availability.

Tech and dress rehearsals begin January 9th, 2027.

Performances will run four weekends, January 15 through February 7, 2027. Performances will be Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 PM, with Sunday matinees every weekend at 2:00 PM.

Brush-up rehearsals may be held Thursday evenings before Friday performances. 

Cast attendance is required at all rehearsals as called by the director and stage manager, unless a conflict has been previously indicated. Cast must be available for all tech and dress rehearsals, performances, and brush-ups. 

Mask policy and health considerations

Actors are encouraged but not required to mask at all rehearsals up through performances as needed. Stage management will have a supply of masks and reserves the right to ask you to wear one.

SHOW SYNOPSIS
Hijinks ensue over the course of one night when two unsuspecting London gentlemen arrive for a visit to the Hardcastle country estate and encounter the women destined to conquer their affections.

SETTING
A British country house in the 1770s

CHARACTERS 

SEEKING: 11 performers and 2 swings who are excited to dive into the comic possibilities of this underrated classical gem. Actors who can sing and/or play instruments are strongly encouraged to audition.

 

Track 1 – Kate Hardcastle, the clever and spirited heroine. Highly intelligent with a sharp wit, she stoops to conquer her arranged fiance by courting him in disguise. This role will require intimacy with the actor playing Marlow.

 

Track 2 – Marlow, the bumbling hero with a heart of gold. A man of many contradictions, he finds his London ways ill-suited to the madcap Hardcastle household and the charming woman he discovers there. This role will require intimacy with the actor playing Kate.

 

Track 3 – Tony Lumpkin, the instigator. A playboy who grates against the confines of his well meaning but overbearing mother, he throws the entire Hardcastle house into chaos through a not-so-innocent prank on the two London gentlemen who have come to visit. This role will require singing.

 

Track 4 – Constance Neville, the sassy best friend. Cousin to the Hardcastle family, she is scheming to make sure that she ends up with her one true love instead of the match her family wants her to make. This role will require intimacy with the actor playing Hastings.

 

Track 5 – Hastings, the loyal fiance. Marlow’s best friend and Constance’s secret fiance, he is more than content to sit back and watch all of the nonsense unravel around them if it means he gets to marry Constance in the end. This role will require intimacy with the actor playing Constance.

 

Track 6 – Mrs. Hardcastle, the scheming mother. Born to take London by storm and forced to reside in the country, she is determined to make matches for all of the children in her care no matter how ill-advised they might be.

 

Track 7 – Hardcastle, the loving father. An eccentric but old-fashioned country gentleman, he expects that the meeting between his daughter and her anticipated betrothed will go off without a hitch. He is quickly proven wrong.

 

Track 8 – Landlord/Diggory/Sir Charles. One of four ensemble roles, this track will require a performer who is able to create and switch between multiple distinct characters. Actor-musicians are encouraged to audition for this role in anticipation of a potential pre-show and intermission musical performance.

 

Track 9 – Roger/Fellow. One of four ensemble roles, this track will require a performer who is able to create and switch between multiple distinct characters. Actor-musicians are encouraged to audition for this role in anticipation of a potential pre-show and intermission musical performance.

 

Track 10 – Maid/Jeremy/Fellow. One of four ensemble roles, this track will require a performer who is able to create and switch between multiple distinct characters.
